Numerical modelling is often the first port of call for solving engineering challenges, allowing users to explore different physical scenarios with ease and control. Simulation tools provide powerful insights for analysing acoustic, thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic problems.

The Full Matrix research team has extensive experience solving problems using a combination of numerical modelling tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA), semi-analytical and fully analytical computation methods.

Machine learning techniques enable a more automated approach to guided wave inspection, moving away from reliance on skilled user interpretation, towards systems that can be deployed on a larger scale.

Full Matrix has developed an in-house toolkit for Gaussian Process based machine learning (FM-GP). FM-GP supports a number of problems including single- and multi-task prediction, binary classification and anomaly detection.

These streamlined tools are optimised to run on low-power computational nodes, such as the Raspberry Pi, so that they may be deployed in distributed sensor systems.

The integration of hardware and software is essential to deploying a sensor system successfully in the field. In order to convey real-time diagnostic information, sensors must be designed to interact with a network of wider instrumentation.

In recent years, the performance of complex sensor systems can increasingly be replicated using cost-effective, off-the-shelf hardware. This advance has opened up new applications where high-performance sensing architectures can be deployed at relatively-low cost.

Designing and testing hardware can form a prohibitive hurdle for developing new products. Full Matrix's dedicated in-house design and test facilities are equipped for rapid development of new sensors and components, allowing ideas to move quickly from initial design, to proof-of-concept, and eventually working prototypes. This process is facilitated by our engineers' industrial design experience and know-how.

Automated 3D printing and CNC coil winding machinery are essential to Full Matrix' ability to precisely craft and iterate prototype electromechanical sensors on short timescales. Rigorous evaluation at our in-house test laboratory provides vital feedback and control in the design procedures.

Maximising the ultrasound signal-to-noise ratio is critical to achieving sensitive detection capability.

Full matrix employs a suite of signal processing techniques to increase the detection capability of our systems. These steps include the use of coded excitations; careful compensation of targeted excitations; and full matrix capture total focusing methods.

The judicious application of these signal processing techniques can significantly enhance the reliability and resolution of measurement techniques in many different applications.
