Full Matrix
Numerical Modeler
About the Role
Working pattern:
Workspace:
Full Time (part time considered)
Hybrid
Location:
Cambridge, UK
Fusion power presents engineers with the most extreme technical challenges. Temperatures hotter than the sun, bombardment from neutrons, the world's largest magnets - bringing net positive fusion power to the grid safely, reliably, and economically requires vastly more sophisticated equipment than the tokamaks first conceived in the 1950s.
Full Matrix's contribution to the field is to provide facility operators with a new sensor platform to monitor the status of aspects of the reactor system. We aim to answer questions like:
-
Are the materials behaving as expected?
-
Are structural defects forming in components?
-
What are the environmental conditions within the reactor?
This will help the fusion power plants of the future operate safely and efficiently, optimising process performance and minimising downtime from maintenance shutdowns.
Our electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) generate and receive low frequency ultrasonic waves in structures. These 'guided waves' interact with the geometry and material properties, so we can interpret reflections and create a real-time model of the system condition.
Creating accurate digital twins of real systems are incredibly valuable in NDT, in predicting the future condition of systems as well as evaluating the current condition.
We are looking for an Applied Mathematician to drive forward the development of Full Matrix’s Numerical modelling capabilities of these scenarios. This will include managing and developing Full Matrix’s Finite Element code to different use-cases; expanding the library of meshing techniques; optimising the efficiency of numerical pipelines through parallelisation and hardware acceleration.
Due to the nature of an early stage start-up, along with your core tasks, you will also be expected to collaborate on work in different areas of the team. This may include software and product development, feeding into and assisting with data analysis and Machine Learning pipelines and conducting lab experiments.
You will therefore ideally have a combination of:
- A relevant technical degree (Maths, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science …) and be able to demonstrate experience modelling physical systems.
- Experience with Python (or other languages)
- Prior experience with using, or a strong interest in learning, the Finite Element method.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of guided waves/continuum mechanics.
Note we are also looking for an experimental physicist - we are very flexible with the work each team member does, so if you'd like to get involved in the experimental side too this would be strongly encouraged.
"How can digital twins improve the safety of the most challenging systems on Earth?"
About You
You are somebody who is pro-active, innovative, positive, and a team player. You will be qualified to at least degree level, or be able to demonstrate comparable knowledge gained through experience in a STEM subject. You will ideally have at least one years’ experience working in industry.
Maybe you're a graduate, finishing your post-doc position, looking for a new technical area to apply your expertise, or be experienced in relevant niche areas. Perhaps you've similar experience which we've not explicitly listed here, but you think you could nonetheless add huge value to our small team.
Full Matrix is an equal opportunities employer and we truly care about our employees. We know that people are at their best when they feel supported and happy, so are committed to creating an inclusive, respectful and understanding workplace for all.
We particularly encourage applications from those who continue to be underrepresented within STEM industries and look forward to increasing diversity and representation in the energy sector.
All our vacancies are advertised as full time positions, but we would be delighted to discuss part time options that would fit around the commitments the rest of your busy life may present. In the spirit of inclusivity we will work to accommodate any such constraints for the right team member.
