Full Matrix
Graduate Software Engineer
About the Role

Full Time (part time considered)

Cambridge, UK
Fusion power presents engineers with the most extreme technical challenges. Temperatures hotter than the sun, bombardment from neutrons, the world's largest magnets - bringing net positive fusion power to the grid safely, reliably, and economically requires vastly more sophisticated equipment than the tokamaks first conceived in the 1950s.
Full Matrix's contribution to the field is to provide facility operators with a new sensor platform to monitor the status of aspects of the reactor system. We aim to answer questions like:
-
Are the materials behaving as expected?
-
Are structural defects forming in components?
-
What are the environmental conditions within the reactor?
This will help the fusion power plants of the future operate safely and efficiently, optimising process performance and minimising downtime from maintenance shutdowns.
Our electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) generate and receive low frequency ultrasonic waves in structures. These 'guided waves' interact with the geometry and material properties, so we can interpret reflections and perturbations and create a real-time model of the system condition.
We are looking for a Graduate Software Engineer who’s experience and knowledge of integrating complex signal processing, data handling, electronics control, and digital twins into a single multifaceted product would help us develop our scalable and reliable monitoring platform. Our GUI is currently built using Python, using API calls to various subsystems, including hardware, communications, and FEA models.
A typical week might include time spent planning or conducting sprints, designing the next prototype, desk-based research, playing board games, testing and debugging, enjoying the uninterrupted view from our office, and reporting on progress.
An ideal applicant would be able to create professional, shippable code working with other developers in the team, but would also have a background or interest in engineering or physical sciences, particularly sensor and instrumentation systems.
"How can we make software that both harnesses our advanced digital twin signal processing techniques whilst being a joy to use?"
About You

Maybe you're a graduate, finishing your post-doc position, looking for a new technical area to apply your expertise, or be experienced in relevant niche areas. Perhaps you've similar experience which we've not explicitly listed here, but you think you could nonetheless add huge value to our small team.
Full Matrix is an equal opportunities employer and we truly care about our employees. We know that people are at their best when they feel supported and happy, so are committed to creating an inclusive, respectful and understanding workplace for all.
We particularly encourage applications from those who continue to be underrepresented within STEM industries and look forward to increasing diversity and representation in the energy sector.
All our vacancies are advertised as full time positions, but we would be delighted to discuss part time options that would fit around the commitments the rest of your busy life may present. In the spirit of inclusivity we will work to accommodate any such constraints for the right team member.
