Rail Monitoring System
A feasibility prototype for wide-area, low-cost ultrasonic rail monitoring, developed with Network Rail and HS2 input.
This project aimed to develop an ultrasonic monitoring system that could detect rail deformation and debris using low-cost electronics and EMAT sensors. Our approach demonstrated signal transmission over 200 m per node using 4 kHz guided waves, with anomaly detection possible via amplitude decay analysis.
Funded under an Innovate UK smart infrastructure challenge, the prototype achieved its cost/performance targets and included software for wireless control and data visualisation.
